Ben and Jerry’s Cleaner Greener Freezer

Famed ice cream maker Ben and Jerry’s have taken steps towards eliminating HFC’s from our refrigeration units. HFC’s which reportedly were more environmentally safe than the ozone depleting CFC’s back in the early 90′s actually helped to accelerate global warming. This new technology uses none of the above, and Greenpeace has made the technology available to manufacturers free of charge. Haier, Whirlpool, LG, Bosch, Panasonic and Samsung have already made use of this technology in other parts of the world w/ over 300 million units.

Well this doesnt sound like news until you find that these units were not available in the U.S. until now. The EPA has allowed Ben and Jerry’s to test 2000 of the eco-friendly freezers in their shops across the country

“We’ve been working on getting better refrigeration technology into our distribution networks in the U.S since 2001, and more specifically on hydrocarbon freezing for the past year,” said Pete Gosselin, Ben & Jerry’s engineer. “It’s one small step for our business, and a giant leap for opening the door to prove that a more environmentally benign refrigeration technology could work in the U.S. market.”
