Free Piston Engines

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Although it sounds revolutionary, these piston-free engines have been around since the 1920′s and have had a resurgence due to the gaining popularity of hybrids. It is basically one piston and has one moving part with no crankshaft, rods, or transmission.

The one piston has two combustion chambers located on either end that help the piston to travel back and forth. On the shaft of the piston itself are batteries that pass over coils in turn producing electricity. There is no loss of power through a crankshaft and will reportedly increase efficiency by 65%. Another advantage of this particular engine is it can be tuned to take on a number of different fuel types including gasoline, diesel, hydrogen, or compressed natual gas.

Hybrid Motorcycle for Honda

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Honda has always been an innovator when it comes to compact gas-saving technology.  Some cars are catching the motorcycle in terms of efficiency.  Now the company aims to put hybrid technology into their motorcycles to turn the tables once again.  Honda projects that the first of the models could be on the market in a matter of a couple of years.

The first and obvious problem is putting all the hybrid technology, which many car makers have had difficulty doing, into a package that could fit in a bike.  However, given Honda’s history I wouldn’t bet against them.  They claim that they will be able to get up to 50% more efficiency out of the engines ranging from 200-1000cc, and costs would be kept down by sharing much of the hybrid technology found in their current cars.
